Their History

The Shetland's roots date back over a thousand years. It is assumed that they were brought to the Shetland Islands by Viking settlers. They are part of the Northern Europe short-tailed species among which we also find Finn sheep, Norvwegian Spaeclsau, Icelandic, Romanovs and others. The Shetland is the smallest of the British Breeds and it retains many of the primitive characteristic. . Today, they are still considered a primitive or "unimproved"breed. Rams usually have spiral horns and weigh between 90 and 125 pounds; ewes generally have no horns and weigh between 75 and 100 pounds. They are fine bones and their short fluke shaped tail does not require docking.
Shetland sheep are mainly raised for their soft wool which has a Bradford count usually in the upper 50's to lower 60's and a fiber diameter of 20-15 microns. Fleeces usually weigh between 2 and 4 pounds (1-1½ Kg, and have a staple length of 2 to 7 inches (5-17 cm)
